Welcome to the Hubb Huggers FAQ Page
Get answers to the most common questions about Hubb Huggers, the ultimate solution for trailer hub protection. Learn how to install, use, and maintain your Hubb Huggers for optimal performance and longevity.
1. What Do I Use to Heat the Hubb Huggers Up?
Any handheld electric heat gun will work just fine. We recommend using a 1550W heat gun for optimal results. Small handheld butane torches are also effective. Remember to keep the heat source close enough to shrink the Hubb Hugger but not too close to melt it.
2. Are the Hubb Huggers Reusable?
No, Hubb Huggers are designed for one-time use only. They provide a secure seal between the hub and grease cap to protect your trailer components effectively during their service life.
3. Can the Hubb Huggers Be Trimmed or Shortened?
Yes, Hubb Huggers can be trimmed to any size as long as they adhere to both the hub and the grease cap to secure them together. If EZ Lube style rubber plugs are present, you can trim the Hubb Hugger to allow for the plug’s removal. Trimming can be done before, during, or after installation. We offer videos that provide guidance on this process.
4. How Long Will the Hubb Huggers Last on My Trailer?
Hubb Huggers are built to last. We have test units that have been in use since 2022 and remain in great shape. However, according to Dexter Axle Company’s recommendations, bearings should be cleaned, inspected, and repacked every 12 months or 12,000 miles. You should replace your Hubb Huggers during this maintenance interval.
5. Does Using the Hubb Huggers Mean I Never Have to Grease My Bearings Again?
No, using Hubb Huggers does not eliminate the need for regular bearing maintenance. While they are designed to keep the grease cap in place and protect the internal components, you still need to service your bearings as recommended.
6. What Is the Best Way to Prep My Hub and Grease Cap to Ensure the Hubb Hugger Will Stick?
Proper preparation is key for optimal adhesion:
- Clean the Surface: Remove any dirt, grease, or road grime using a scraper, screwdriver, or wire brush.
- Wipe Clean: Use Acetone or Denatured Alcohol to thoroughly clean the area.
- Dry Completely: Ensure the surfaces are completely dry before applying the Hubb Hugger.
7. When Is the Best Time to Install Hubb Huggers on My Trailer?
You can install Hubb Huggers at any time. However, the best time is when your trailer is brand new or immediately after you’ve packed the bearings. Replace the Hubb Huggers every time you clean and repack your hubs and bearings to maintain optimal protection.
